A near continuous line of Brunner glands is seen in the first portion of the duodenum a discontinuous line is seen in the proximal second part of the duodenum. In patients with peptic duodenitis, groups of Brunner glands may be present in the superficial portion of the mucosa.īrunner glands diminish in size and number from the pylorus to the fourth portion of the duodenum. Groups of Brunner glands also can be found in the lower layer of the mucosa. Brunner glands lie predominantly in the duodenal submucosa, just beneath the muscularis mucosae. Brunner glands also contain endocrine cells that store various polypeptides.
